11 Answers to Acne Questions You've Always Wanted to Ask

As someone who suffered from acne as a teenager, and now dedicating my life to help others have clear skin, there were always questions that I had and wanted to ask. As a Dermatologist, my patients have the same questions and so I wanted to share them with you.

Q: What is the best way to treat acne?

A: Mild acne responds well to the Dr. Lin Skincare Acne Clarifying System, because it contains benzoyl peroxide to kill acne causing bacteria, and salicylic acid to purify clogged pores. A trip to the dermatologist or medi-spa for chemical peels and extractions are also an effective way to maintain clear skin. Moderate acne may require the use of oral antibiotics, a topical retinoid as well as the acne kit.  In severe causes acne may require Accutane, now known as isotretinoin.

Q: I never had acne as a teenager. Why am I now getting acne as an adult?

A: Hormonal changes are probably to blame. It is a myth that only teenagers get acne.

Q: What role does diet play in acne?

A: It was believed that food did not have an impact on skin, however recently there have been studies that show food may trigger or aggravate acne prone skin. Chocolate and high sugar foods may make acne worse.

Q: I wash my face several times a day. Why do I still get acne?

A: Over washing your face can cause irritation and over sensitize skin. Dirt or dirty skin is not the cause of acne. Washing morning and night should do the trick.

Q: Should I wash my face after a work-out?

A:  Yes. Either wash your face or use a pre-moistened medicated pad or wipe to remove the sweat from your face. Dr.  Lin Skincare Acne Treatment Pads or my new Acne Cleansing Wipes work well for this.  They are both oil and alcohol free and contain 2% salicylic acid to wipe away impurities and unclog pores.

Q: Does the sun help acne?

A: The sun can temporarily improve the appearance of the skin by drying of the acne bump and tanning the skin, however the acne may actually get worse afterwards. Also, the sunlight contains ultraviolet light which can cause skin cancer in the future. Therefore, sun as a treatment for acne is not recommended.

Q: What kind of cosmetics can an acne patient use?

A: Mineral based make-up is usually best and gentlest for acne prone skin. One of the worst things you could do would be to sleep in make-up. Be sure to wash your face before bed.

Q: Is it harmful to squeeze my blemishes?

A: Extractions can be beneficial, however self-extractions are usually harmful. It is easy to scar the skin or spread bacteria to nearby pores. It’s advisable to see a professional for extractions to help purify clogged pores.

Q: Can anything be done about scarring caused by acne?

A: Yes, thanks to new technology there are now many options for acne scar treatments. Fractionated laser treatments work well. TCA cross and punch excisions are other options. Sometimes a combination of all three procedures is recommended.  My acne spot corrector is a powerful treatment that contains 5% benzoyl peroxide to shrink breakouts, and natural botanicals to fade the dark marks left behind.

Q: How long before I see a visible result from using my acne medications?

A: Realistically you should have patience for 2-3 months. Results can be seen earlier.

Q: When my face is clear can I stop taking my medication now?

A: Please continue to your medications as instructed by your doctor. If you are using over-the-counter medications for your acne, use them as needed. Usually, even when the acne clears, you may need to continue the medications to prevent new breakouts from forming.

Being aware and educating ourselves are the best way to combat acne. What are some other questions that you might have? Feel free to send me an email or post a question on our forum at www.DrLinskincare.com and I would be happy to answer them.  Let’s fight acne together!
